The Kawai CA901 is Kawai’s flagship Concert Artist digital piano, and it’s a serious instrument—not one of their entry-level digitals. Kawai positions it as the top CA model, immediately above the CA701.

The important stuff

The Grand Feel III action is probably its biggest selling point. It has 88 full wooden keys, long pivot length, graded counterweights on every key, triple sensors and simulated let-off. The white and black keys have Kawai’s Ivory Touch/Ebony Touch surfaces. From a piano dealer’s perspective, this is much closer to selling someone on piano touch rather than selling them a keyboard.

Sound-wise, it uses Kawai’s SK-EX Rendering engine, including the Shigeru Kawai SK-EX Competition Grand and Concert Grand recordings, with 88-key multi-channel sampling and resonance modeling. It also has the HI-XL engine for additional instruments and 256-note polyphony.

The other major feature is the actual spruce soundboard speaker system. Kawai’s TwinDrive system uses transducers to physically excite the wooden soundboard, supplemented by conventional speakers, including front-facing speakers and top-mounted 360-degree diffusers. The total amplification is rated at 135 watts. That gives the CA901 considerably more of the physical presence of an acoustic piano than most conventional digitals.

It also has a 5-inch anti-glare touchscreen, Bluetooth MIDI and Bluetooth Audio, USB audio/recording, MP3/WAV/SMF playback and recording, Spatial Headphone Sound, three Grand Feel pedals with half-pedal support, 96 voices and a substantial amount of user voicing/tuning adjustment.
